 What is the Concert Vault?

The Concert Vault plays live concert performances from master recordings owned by Wolfgang's Vault. For more information visit our About page.

How much does the Concert Vault cost?

Access to the Concert Vault is free for up to 10 hours of streaming each month. Every concert in the Concert Vault can be streamed at your PC for free. Some of the concerts in the Concert Vault are also available for download; some of these are free and some must be purchased. In order to stream more than 10 hours of audio in a month you need to purchase an annual WVIP Membership.

Which concerts in the Concert Vault are available for download?

Click on the All Downloads link in the left column of any page to see all concerts that are available for download.

Why aren't all of the concerts available for download?

Although we own rights to these recordings, in many cases others have rights as well, including performers and song publishers. We do not make a concert available for download unless all rights have been properly cleared.

Do artists get paid when their concerts are played in the Concert Vault? Do they get paid for downloads?

Absolutely. We pay licensing fees for every single track played by every listener to the three major Performance Rights Organizations (PROs) - ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. These payments ultimately go to the performing artists and song publishers. A large percentage of the sales of downloads go directly to performers and song publishers.

Why do you need to know my email address and other information at registration?

We use your email address as an account name so that you can add concerts to your Favorites list and place orders at Wolfgang's Vault. We do not send unsolicited email. Please see our Privacy Policy for more details.

Please add concerts for (fill-in-the-blank performer).

The Concert Vault opened with 300 concerts in late 2006 and we have been adding new concerts every week since then. Thousands are on the site today. Which ones we add are influenced by your feedback. Just send us a note from the Contact Us page.

Can I listen to concerts or Vault Radio on my iPhone or iPod Touch?

Yes! Read more about our free Concert Vault App, or go directly to the iTunes App Store to download and install it now.

 WVIP Membership

 What's a WVIP?

WVIP Membership upgrades your regular experience at the Vault in several ways; members get a $50 store credit, substantial discounts on merchandise and downloads, enhanced stream quality and much more. Click here for more information.

After I purchase a WVIP Membership, how do I use it?

WVIP Membership benefits activate immediately. The next time you select a concert or playlist to play you will receive enhanced 192k streams.

Your WVIP store credit will be applied to your next order, and any subsequent orders, until it has been completely used. You'll see the credit on the final checkout confirmation page before you place an order. You can always check your credit balance in your Account page.

Your WVIP Discount will be displayed on the final checkout confirmation page the next time you order merchandise or downloads, along with any other promotional discounts and applied store credits.

How do I buy a WVIP Membership as a gift?

Gift purchases are made the same way that you purchase a membership for yourself. Visit the WVIP Signup page, and be sure that you have selected that "It's For a Friend" option at the top of the page.

I want to buy WVIP for a friend, but I don't want them to know about it right away.

No problem - just be sure change the "Where is this going" option at the bottom of the page to "E-mail to me." That way you can hold onto their gift and give it to them at the perfect time - you can even print it out for them if you'd like. Their membership period will not begin until they visit the site and activate their membership.

How do WVIP Members reserve an appointment to tour the Vault in San Francisco?

Vault tours are conducted by our archivists by appointment and tours are limited to 4 persons at a time. Reservations are required, and spots are reserved on a "first come - first served" basis. To make your reservation, call our Customer Service group at (866) 650-0810 or submit a request at our Contact Us page. We will reply via phone or email to confirm your reservation. Tours can take up to 1.5 hours.

How does the WVIP Store Credit work?

Your WVIP Store Credit balance is maintained by our website and automatically applied to purchases you make at Wolfgang's Vault as long as there is an available balance. If your WVIP Membership expires your WVIP Store Credit will no longer be available. If you renew your WVIP Membership before it expires, the then prevailing WVIP Store Credit will be added to your existing Store Credit balance.

How do I renew my WVIP Membership?

If you selected Auto-Renew when you joined you are all set - your credit card will be charged on your original expiration date, your benefits will be extended for the following year, and your store credit will be increased.

If you did not select Auto-Renew, it's almost as easy. Visit the WVIP Membership page and click SIGN ME UP - the same thing you did when you originally joined.

 Streaming

Can I listen to the Concert Vault from more than one computer?

You can access the Concert Vault from any computer, but you may only listen from one computer at a time.

Why is there a small gap of silence between each track in a concert?

Each track played in a concert is in fact an individual "stream." When one track completes, the player must load the next track before it begins playing. This results in the short gap of silence you hear between tracks of a concert. The track files themselves are "continuous;" when we make downloads available they will play without interruption once they are stored locally on your PC.

Do I have to install special software to listen to the Concert Vault?

Most listeners need to do nothing. The Concert Vault works on any Windows PC, Linux PC or Mac as long as you have the following:

  • Flash Player Version 9
  • Javascript enabled
  • Popups allowed for wolfgangsvault.com (see above)

Can I use the Concert Vault on a slow Internet connection?

Yes. Our players autosense your connection's speed. If it is not fast enough to listen to our broadband stream you will automatically receive a lower bitrate stream suitable for even dialup Internet connections.

 Downloads

What quality files are you offering for download?

Concert Vault currently offers three types of DRM-Free download files. All concerts for sale are available both as high-quality 256k mp3 files and as lossless FLAC files encoded from 16 bit / 44.1k CD-quality files. Free downloads (from the Daytrotter and Noise Pop catalogs) are 128k mp3 files.

What is FLAC and what do I need to play FLAC files?

FLAC is a file format for losslessly compressing audio data. By offering FLAC files, Concert Vault is able to offer concerts at higher quality. All FLAC downloads on Concert Vault are currently encoded from 16 bit / 44.1k CD-quality files.

In order to enjoy downloaded FLAC files, you must have a media player that can play FLAC or software with the ability to decode the files into their native format. The Concert Vault Download Manager will not decode the files for you.

If you are interested in FLAC, but have not used it before, you need to get familiar with it. A good resource is SourcForge's FLAC page, and Wikipedia's FLAC page can also be helpful.

I hear gaps between songs when I play your downloads, whether it's on my computer or my iPod.

You can address this in most cases in your media player. All major media players (iTunes, Windows Media, etc.) have supported gapless mp3 playback for some time. Many portable mp3 players, including several iPod models, also support gapless mp3 playback. For an excellent overview please visit Wikipedia's Gapless playback page. iTunes users may also want to review Apple's Gapless Playback page.

My hard disk crashed, and I lost my files. Can you send them to me again?

Unfortunately we cannot be responsible for what happens to your files once you have downloaded them. We strongly encourage you to make a backup of your Concert Vault purchases after you have downloaded them.

I'm having trouble downloading concerts - what do I do?

Visit our FAQ Section below on Troubleshooting Downloads. It has answers to most problems people encounter. If you can't find your answer there don't hesitate to Contact Us.

 Playlists

 What is a playlist?

Concert Vault allows you to create customized playlists that contain tracks from many different concerts. You can have up to 200 playlists, and each one can have up to 200 tracks on it. You can also publish any or all of your playlists so that other Concert Vault listeners can listen to them, rate them and post comments to them.

How do I add a track to one of my Playlists?

You can do this in two ways. First, from any Concert detail page, click on the plus sign next to the track you want to add, and then select the playlist (or name a new playlist) that you want to save that track into. Second, from the small player window, click the plus sign icon at the bottom of the player to add the currently playing song to a playlist.

How do I play one of my Playlists?

Just like you play a concert. Click on "My Vault" in the left navigation panel of any page, then click on the playlist you want to play. From this page you can edit your playlist, add a summary, and set preferences including whether everyone can see your playlist, and if you'd like to received an email whenever someone comments on your playlist. From here simply click on the "Play" button.

How do I play someone else's Playlist?

Again, just like you play a concert. Click on any of the Playlist options in the left navigation panel of any page, then click on the playlist you want to play. Or you can search for playlists by typing in a song name, performer name or even a playlist author's screen name. Once you've found the playlist you want, click on it to see it's detail page, and simply click on the "Play" button. From this page you can also rate that playlist or post comments to it.

 Using The Site

How do I rate a concert or add it to My Favorites list?

You can do this in two ways. First, when you are viewing the detailed information for a concert, click on the number of stars next to "Your rating", or click on the "Add Concert to My Favorites" link. Second, if you are listening to A Concert, click on the RATINGS or FAVORITES links in the bottom of the player and select the appropriate item. If you rate a concert and change your mind later you can always change your rating.

I don't like my screen name. Can I change it?

You can do this easily. In the top left corner of any page, click on the "Account" link, then click on the "Change Account Info" link. You can edit many other aspects of your Account here that will help you personalize your Concert Vault experience.

How do I use your RSS feed?

The Concert Vault RSS Feed is perfect for keeping up with what we have added recently to the Vault. To use it, you need to decide which RSS Feed reader to use. Most popular web browsers (including Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari) now include built-in RSS readers. To use your browser's built-in reader simply click here, or click on our RSS feed link or in the "New Releases" section on the Concert Vault home page and follow the instructions. There are several other popular feed readers you may wish to explore, including My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader.

How do I use your Single-Track Widget (or "Embed" feature)?

It's very easy to do. Simply click on a tracks embed link - from either a concert's Detail page on the site, or from within the player - and copy the embed code that is generated. Then paste it into whatever page you want. The single-track widget works well in MySpace, iGoogle and Facebook pages, and in all popular blog pages.

Can I pause the music, change tracks and fast-forward or rewind?

You can do all of these. Simply click on the track you want to listen to if you want to change tracks. You can skip forwards or backwards in this way. To fast-forward or rewind within a song simply drag the progress indicator as you desire.

What else does my computer need to use the Concert Vault?

The Concert Vault works on any Windows PC, Linux PC or Mac as long as you have the following:

  • Flash Player 9
  • Javascript enabled
  • Popups allowed for wolfgangsvault.com (see above)

Is my PC the only device I can use to listen to the Concert Vault?

You can deliver Concert Vault audio from your PC to your stereo in many ways.

One option is to plug your laptop or computer's audio output into a stereo input using a $10 cable available at Radio Shack and many other electronics stores

Apple's AirPort Express, when coupled with the rogue amoeba's Airfoil software, is another excellent way to stream audio from your Mac or PC to your stereo.

Can I listen to the Concert Vault on devices like the Squeezebox, Roku Soundbridge or Sonos systems?

Wolfgang's Vault is available to Sonos users who are WVIP members. Click here for more information. Currently Sonos is the only external music system that we support.

 Troubleshooting - Streaming

When the player pops open it tells me I need to upgrade to Flash Version 9. Is this true?

Yes it is. Concert Vault, like many media sites, now requires Flash version 9 to take advantage of its better performance and security features. For most people the upgrade is very simple. Be sure to close and relaunch your browser after the upgrade is complete.

Upgrading Flash didn't work. It says it did but it keeps asking me to install it again.

In rare cases the automatic Flash updater won't work properly. Again, make sure you close and relaunch your browser. If that doesn't work, we recommend a complete uninstall and reinstall of Flash. Click here for instructions.

I have logged in, but when I try to listen to a Concert it tells me that I need to login again!

Make sure cookies are enabled on your PC - they must be in order for the Concert Vault to work. Click here for more information on enabling cookies. If your PC is part of an office network, your IT security group may have permanently disabled cookies; if they have you will not be able to listen to Concert Vault streams.

When I click to listen to a concert or to Vault Radio, nothing happens.

Our players run in a popup window. You may need to tell your popup blocker to allow our popups to appear. Here's how you do it:

Internet Explorer:

  • From the browser's menu, click on "Tools -> Pop-up Blocker -> Pop-up Blocker Settings..."
  • Enter wolfgangsvault.com and click "Add", then click "Close".

Firefox:

  • From the browser's menu, click on "Tools -> Options..." -> Content"
  • Next to the "Block Popup Windows" option, click on "Allowed Sites."
  • Enter wolfgangsvault.com and click "Allow", then click "OK', then click "OK" again.

Safari:

  • Click on the "Safari" menu and uncheck "Block Pop-Up Windows."

NOTE: if you do this and are still not seeing the player popup window, it means that you also have popup blockers enabled in a third-party Internet Security/Privacy software product (like Norton Internet Security). Check your software's Help section for how to allow popups from our site.

What do I do if I am listening to a concert and the music stops?

Occasionally your Internet connection may be interrupted for a wide range of reasons beyond our control. When this happens, the concert you are listening to may stop playing. If it does, click on another song in the concert; if this does not begin playing, simply go back to the Concert Vault website and re-select the concert to begin playing it again.

In some office networks you may have a high-speed connection to the Internet, but your company's security provisions may be scanning our stream to ensure that it is not a virus. In some cases this will interrupt our stream enough to cause it to stop playing.

My computer says I need Flash, but I know I have already installed it.

In the rare cases this happens the best thing to do is to completely uninstall Flash before re-installing it.

  • First, go to Adobe's web site and follow their Flash uninstall instructions at http://www.adobe.com/go/tn_14157.
  • Close all browser windows and completely exit your browser.
  • Open one browser window and go to Adobe's Flash Player Install Page at http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer/.
  • Carefully follow the instructions on this page to install Flash.
  • Exit your browser again, and if required complete any install steps required.
  • Re-open your browser and try the Concert Vault again.

The Concert Vault Player opens but no music plays.

There are two different issues that fit this description. If the track counter for the first track begins counting (from 0:00 to 0:01 and on through the length of the track), then the concert is in fact playing, but there is a problem with the audio setup on your Mac or PC. In this case:

  • If you are a Mac user, check your Audio settings in the Audio MIDI Setup utility, located in the Applications/Utilities folder on your Mac. Audio Output/Format should be set to 44100.0 Hz.
  • If you are a Windows PC user it's a bit more complicated. There is an excellent tip on the subject, including a link to more information at Adobe, at http://www.planetamd64.com/lofiversion/index.php?t26915.html.

On the other hand, if the track counter stays at 0:00, then your PC's audio drivers may have become corrupted or are out of date and need to be reinstalled. Please consult your PC's installation guidelines on how to do this. If you are still experiencing this please send us a message by using our CONTACT US page.

The Concert Vault player window is opening but it's blank.

This can be happen when you have configured your browser to block javascript or secure content. Here's how you enable javascript:

Internet Explorer:

  • From the browser's menu, click on "Tools -> Internet Options"
  • On the Security tab, select "default level"
  • On the Privacy tab, select "default level"
  • Finally, click on the OK button

Firefox:

  • From the browser's menu, click on "Tools -> Options..." -> Content", and make sure "Enable JavaScript" is checked.

Safari:

  • From the browser's menu, click on "Safari -> Preferences -> Security", and make sure "Enable Javascript" is checked.

NOTE: if you do this and are still seeing a blank player window, either your corporate PC security policy has disabled javascript, or on Windows PCs your scripting engine isn't working properly. Several listeners have reported success in the latter case by doing the following. First, re-register four Windows files:

  • Click "Start," and then click "Run."
  • Type regsvr32 msscript.ocx in the "Open" box and click "OK."
  • Repeat for dispex.dll,vbscript.dll, and scrrun.dll.

Next, make sure the file (open) type .JS is properly associated:

  • In Control Panel, click "Folder Options," and then click "File Types."
  • Locate the .JS extension and click "Advanced."
  • Make sure the "Application to perform action" field contains: C:\WINDOWS\System32\WScript.exe "%1" %*

I have installed your Download Manager, but when I double-click on it nothing happens.

Our Download Manager requires that you have a reasonably current version of Java on your PC or Mac.

Click here to download and install the latest version of Java.

Then try our Download Manager again and your concerts should begin downloading.

 Troubleshooting - Downloads

I tried to download the installer for you Download Manager but all I got was a blank page.

If you are using Internet Explorer this happens a lot. Check the top of the page; there is probably a yellow security warning there that says:

"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site form downloading files to your computer. Click here for options..."

Click on that bar, then click "Download File" and you should get the DM installer.

I clicked 'Download Concerts Now,' but all I glot was a .CVDM file.

This means you have not installed our Download Manager yet. It's required to purchase and download concerts from us. Click here to get our Download Manager's Mac Installer or Windows Installer.

I have installed your Download Manager, but when I double-click on it nothing happens.

Our Download Manager requires that you have a reasonably current version of Java on your PC or Mac.

Click here to download and install the latest version of Java.

Then try our Download Manager again and your concerts should begin downloading.

I downloaded a concert. Where are my files, and how do I play them?

On a Mac, the default folder location for your downloads is Music > Concert Vault Downloads. On a PC, they are stored in My Documents > My Music > Concert Vault Downloads. The first time you launch the Download Manager, you will be asked if you would like to change this location.

Most people play and manage their digital audio files in a media player like iTunes. Our Download Manager also has the option of importing downloaded files directly into iTunes - you can set that in the Download Manager's 'Preferences'.

If you are unsure of where your files are saved, simply open the Download Manager; click on File > Preferences; then click on "Change Location" to display the current location of your downloaded files.

I downloaded a concert, but a received an 'error downloading' message on several tracks.

This can happen if there is network interruption during your download. Simply open the Download Manager again and the remaining tracks should be delivered.

I need to re-install the Download Manager. Where can I find the installer?

If you are having problems running the installer read our Mac Installer or Windows Installer instructions.
